101 Licks – Licks 41-44 (Blues)

Here’s a quick breakdown for each of lick:

Lick 41: BB King Style 1

A player like BB King uses bends and vibrato to get the most expression out of an ostensibly simple blues phrase, especially on repeated notes like the Bb in bar 1. Watch for the chromatic bend on the first string (10th to 11th fret) in bar 2.

Lick 42: BB King Style 2

An alternative take over the same backing, this idea highlights the more jazzy, chromatic approach sometimes taken by players like BB, as a solo develops. More stinging vibrato from the outset too.

Lick 43: SRV Style

This SRV style phrase mixes in some bass string riffs while letting the higher notes ring, for a self-contained ‘rhythm and lead’ style effect. Use a heavy picking attack and emphasise the low notes.

Lick 43: SRV Style

This idea uses a little more drive and some tricky chromatic play around the blues scale in the first position. Really dig into those low notes in bar 3 for both clarity and expression. A lot of these licks originated with acoustic bluesmen, to add colour to their open chords.
